PREREQUISITES AND RECOMMENDED PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

Previous knowledge about Chemistry concepts including atomic structure, chemical bonding, thermochemistry, chemical equilibrium, acid-base reactions, and kinetics.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE

The course will introduce the most important aspects of Electrochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Biochemistry. The subject will be divided into ten topics distributed in three thematic blocks. The first block will begin with an introduction to Electrochemistry, and some of its applications in energy generation and storage systems will be shown. Corrosion, the different types, and how to prevent it will also be introduced. In the second module, the different functional groups and types of reactions will be shown; Isomerism and Stereoisomerism will be described, and a review of the structure, properties, and reactivity of these groups will be made. The third block will introduce Biochemistry, describing the different types of macromolecules, their structure, and reactivity. In each topic, there will be a presentation of the theoretical part in different slides with explanatory texts (lecture notes) that will include examples that help with understanding. Students will be provided with practical exercises (with solutions) for each block to consolidate the theoretical concepts taught. At the end of the course, an evaluation will be carried out through 4 questionnaires and their solutions and 4 dynamic tests, covering the whole topics.

OBJECTIVES: KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Understand the basic principles of electrochemistry and their applications in fuel cells and batteries

- Know the processes that give rise to corrosion, its main forms, and how to prevent them.

- Comprehend the importance of organic chemistry in daily life.

- Correctly use organic chemistry terminology and know the basic rules of nomenclature of organic compounds.

- Understand the mechanisms of organic reactions.

- Assimilate the concept of isomerism, identify the enantiomers, and distinguish the different types of stereoisomers.

- Know the structure and reactivity of the different types of functional groups.

- Apply spectroscopic techniques to carry out a structural determination of organic compounds.

- Recognise the main biological macromolecules, their structure, and their importance in biological processes.

TEACHING MATERIAL

The provided teaching material comprises:

- Lecture notes: Presentations and explanatory texts with theoretical content about the different topics of each module.

- Practical cases: Practical exercises for each topic of the corresponding module. Solutions for every exercise are included.

- Self-evaluation questionnaires

- Final assessments

 PRACTICAL ASSIGMENTS AND ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES

In each topic, an assortment of practical exercises with the solutions are provided. In addition, students will have four final assessments and their solutions, which cover all the topics of the subject.
